Trader Joe’s catch of the day: Wild Salmon Rolls

25 Jan

I’m still in D.C. It’s been extremely cold here this week, something I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss. Not.

The other night, I found myself arriving an hour early to meet a friend for dinner in Arlington. As I ascended from the Metro, I feared not being able to find a place to hang out.

But as my eyes cleared from wind chill and Metro dust, right across the street the welcoming red of the Trader Joe’s sign gleamed in my direction.

I wandered around, picked up a few greeting cards – one can always use extra cards to have on hand.

The tasting bar was offering Wild Salmon Rolls. I love East Coast fish rolls – lobster rolls in particular. And I love salmon. So, despite dinner plans, I had to try a bite.

The bite I had was fabulous. Salmony, kind of dry (my preference over gooey with dressing) and the bread was really good.

Now, I just have to pray that the Trader Joe’s in Kansas City has them on hand, too!

Thank you, TJ’s.

Fish Friday: Trader Joe’s Salmon Jerky

9 Nov

I’m a jerky fan from way back. It reminds me of my dad and cross-country road trips with the family when I was little.

I also love salmon. So, when I saw Wild Salmon Jerky on the shelf at TJ’s, I had to try it.

The Wild Salmon Jerky experience

I have to say, at first bite, I wasn’t sure it was blog worthy. Upon second bite, I still wasn’t sure. After the third and fourth bites, I still wondered. But, here’s the thing, there was a fifth and sixth bite, and I kept on biting.

It’s predictably and thankfully salty, but the salmon has a kind of funk to it – a little smoky with a fishy tang. Then, just when you think the flavor’s packed its punch, here comes the hint of maple syrup. One thing’s for sure: It’s not your daddy’s jerky.

I recommend it if you have adventurous taste buds and appreciate the stronger flavors.

Thank you for putting the Wild in the Salmon Jerky, TJ’s.

The wild life: Trader Joe’s frozen salmon dinner

27 Jul

As long as it’s above 90 degrees F, I’m going to be exploring meal options that require no stove-top or oven cooking.

While I could eat salad for dinner every night, I’m lured down Trader Joe’s freezer aisle and inevitably something thawable goes home with me. Case in point: Wild Salmon with orzo, spinach and zucchini.

Sure the picture on the package looked delicious, as they always do, but would the contents live up to the beauty shot, as they often don’t?

Well, if it’s featured on this blog, it means it gets a thumbs up from Things I Love At Trader Joe’s.

One hint: I’d recommend heating on the lower side of what’s recommended on the package (about 6 mins.) to make sure the salmon doesn’t become dry. Mine was tender and delicious, and looked like this:

Thank you, TJ’s.
