Recipe for relief

9 Sep

Olive oil goes the distance, from dressing salads to searing shrimp and now, to keeping us mosquito-bite free.

a natural mosquito repellent

Recipe for relief

Trader Joe’s doesn’t sell the essential oils, but the oils (I used Lemon Eucalyptus and Cinnamon Leaf) can be easily found at Whole Foods, health food stores or several online outlets.

As most of us know, this was a record year for mosquitoes in the U.S. (International friends, has it been the same where you are?) I felt like a captive in my house, unable to enjoy the sun or brave the heat of summer.

I was tempted to cover my skin with Off! or other chemical, awful-smelling agents, but before I resorted to that, I sought out a natural concoction … and found the recipe above.

And it worked! I played with friends outside in a park on a river bank on a sunny, bug-friendly afternoon. No bites! However, about six hours later, I sat on the ground in a short skirt in the evening under trees. Bites happened. Maybe I should have reapplied after so long and before coming in direct contact with the enemy?

Please let us know if you have a recipe for a natural repellent, or if you try this one!

Voir le Tour de France avec cette savon belle!

11 Jul

What better way to celebrate the Tour de France than by luxuriating in a hand wash with Trader Jacques’ Orange Blossom Honey French liquid soap?

Orange Blossom Honey, oo la la!

The light, orange blossomy fragrance will whisk your soul to one of the quaint villages seen as a blur behind sweaty, tortured cyclists.

The scent will transport you to a dainty, seated position under a large Oak on one of the French countryside’s rolling verdant hills. Meanwhile, the bikers struggle with bruises, sore muscles and the threat of torn ligaments as they encounter incline after incline.

Guests in your home will also notice and ask where you picked up this delightful personal cleanser.  On your last trip to Paris? In a little boutique on New York’s Upper East Side? “No, silly,” you answer, “at Trader Joe’s. But, of course!”

Viva la savon!

Merci, Trader Jacques.

Rough tissue has soft heart

15 Jan

How many times do you walk through a crowded store and discover a note written just for you on a product? A product that says it cares about you when you’re down, when you’re faced with problems and that it will be there for you when other items have forsaken their duty? Just once in a lifetime. If you’re lucky.

There I was, staring down at this kind, quiet message, telling me, “I’m there when you’re sad. Feel better, Tissue.” I picked up the box and found more messages. Tissue told me it was there for me when I was sick, when I had to pick up icky things. And when toilet paper would run out on me…Tissue would be there, too.

This is not a flimsy, soft and cuddly tissue. It’s got a stronger fiber. One that can deal with the task at hand. A tissue not to be savored, but appreciated for its dependability and stamina. Let Puff’s tend to one’s specialty needs, Trader Joe’s tissue is the Hefty bag of sniffle wipes. Industrial strength with a heart of gold.

One friend who shall remain nameless (anetjay) was not as taken by message or the product. But I would suggest to her, no tissue can be everything to everyone. Appreciate this tissue for what it can do – and it does it well. And open your heart to its caring message.

Love is just around the corner,  in a box on the bottom shelf of aisle four. Yours for $1.29. Plus tax.

Tingle all the way!

18 Dec

Tingle and crisp scent win another body soap customer.

From Janet:

Now that a new TJs has opened up just over a mile from my house, I have been gradually shifting most of my weekly grocery shopping away from other grocery stores and over to TJs over the last few months. Still, there were a few times that I found myself heading to the old fashion grocery for items, one of them being body wash.

Feeling adventuresome one day, I decided to see if TJs had any body wash, and sure enough, they did. I was a bit skeptical at first since the only option involved tea tree oil, but I decided to give it a try. Long story short, this is my new go-to body wash, and I love it! I love the tingle and crisp smell of the tea tree in the morning, and it foams up well and lasts forever!

Merry crispness from the shelves of Trader Joes:
