A taste of springtime: Homemade lemonade

24 Apr

It’s the end of April in the Midwest, among other places. In Missouri we had sleet yesterday, and today, we woke up to 30-degree temps and wind chills in the 20s.

But when I stepped into Trader Joe’s last weekend, I could have sworn it was spring! In fact, it could have been verging on summer the way the store was decked out.

Case in point:

A glass of sunshine. Just add a spritz of clear skies, rainbows and unicorns.

A glass of sunshine. Just add a spritz of clear skies, rainbows and unicorns.

It’s a scene that instantly transports me to age 11, visiting my cousins in Memphis, Tenn., running around barefoot in their family’s sprawling, soft, overgrown yard.

The adults sprawled in aluminum folding chairs with loosely woven green-and-white striped plastic strips. They’d sit in those chairs for hours drinking lemonade. And we’d leave our glasses of summer’s nectar by them as we ran around aimfully.

The moms and dads and grandparents would stand up to get a refreshing refill, and they’d have criss-cross red marks on the backs of their legs where their shorts had ridden up from the plastic chairing.

Lemonade is what sunny days taste like.

Thanks for the memories, Trader Joe’s.

And thank you for stopping by. Please visit anytime and leave a kind thought.

Halloween at Trader Joe’s: Treat or treat

29 Oct

Of course – of course! – Trader Joe’s is a great place to stock up for a Halloween party! Even without Halloween-themed items, it’s a no brainer, even for a zombie.

But, Trader Joe’s being Trader Joe’s, there are many Halloweenish goodies for your partying pleasure. Cases in point:

Halloween cookies from Trader Joe's

(The picture on the cookies box reminds me of the squirrel that got his head stuck in a Halloween decoration.)

Ghoulie Gummy candy from Trader Joe's

And for the thirsty adult…

Dearly beloved red wine

I hope that these give you a start in preparing for your Halloween celebration. If you’re on the East Coast, please stay safe this week through Hurricane Sandy. I hope the wind and water subside before Wednesday.

Take good care.

Summer: Savor the flavor. Caribbean Fruit Floes

31 Aug

I first tried and loved Trader Joe’s Coconut Fruit Floes, giving them a “4-wow” rating. But there are several members of the Fruit Floe family. Judging by the way Caribbean sang for me, it’s a clan with a lot of talent.

Caribbean Fruit Floes

As those of you in the U.S. begin your Labor Day weekend, and for anyone in a country sinking into autumn soon, I would highly encourage you to check out these yummy Popsicles. Although the presence of several tropical fruits are identifiable, strawberry takes center stage.

Have a safe and delicious weekend!
Thanks, TJ’s

Coconut water makes tasty Popsicle

6 Aug

I was expecting something totally different: a light flavor, a small pop, an icy/watery consistency. Something totally different from what I found.

Trader Joe’s offers up the coldest, coconuttiest treat I can imagine, and in a full-sized Popsicle form.

Coconut Water fruit floes

Coconut Water fruit floes are “super refreshing” as Trader Joe’s promises on the package. And the flavor, with pieces of coconut throughout, makes a bold statement, “I am coconut. Hear me roar.”

If you don’t like coconut, there is no question that you’ll be wasting your time and tongue trying one of these tropical delights. Please, leave them for us, the coconut lovers of the world, to savor every chewy sinew and icy last drop.

Thank you, TJ’s!

Fear: Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter

30 Jul

Speculoos Cookie Butter

I rounded the corner while shopping and saw the succulently stacked pyramid of Speculoos Cookie Butter.

Immediately, I had conflicting urges: full-body dive into the mound, filling my basket as I awoke from my trance swooning, or run and hide under a heavy piece of furniture, rocking back and forth, humming softly?

The possibility of pure and utter delight that might result at the first bite of something called “Cookie Butter” was almost too much to handle.

I retained my cool and calm exterior.  However, in bathing-suit weather, I put my hands on my cart and steered away from primal temptation.

Have you tried this wondrous product? What are your thoughts? Should I dare? Will I be able to resist making this 11-oz jar a one-serving container?!

Thank you for your help and insights!

Thanks for your creative creations, TJ’s. I think.
