Ftw: Go fish at Trader Joe’s

2 Jul

Tonight was the night I cooked the frozen Marinated White Fish Vera Cruz.

White fish Vera Cruz from Trader Joe's

Catch of the day

It comes out of the bag a hefty mound – obviously not meant for a single serving. I let it mostly thaw in a bowl of warm water for about 20 minutes, then put it in the microwave for the suggested 4 minutes + 2 more minutes.

I put a dainty piece on my plate, and was really happy with the flavor, the texture and ease in which it went down the gullet. I dished out another serving. Gone soon. Well, then there was just one piece left. I could save it for tomorrow, but why wait?

I realized I was getting stuffed, but the marinade was so good – tomatoes, green olives, chiles, onions and capers – that I felt the need to finish it all off.

Serving size suggested on the wrapper? Four servings per package.

Oops.

Smoked trout in a can: Today’s catch from Trader Joe’s

11 Mar

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know how much I love smoked anything.

It was at a weak moment that I passed the neatly stacked tins of smoked trout. They were right there with my other smoky fish favorite, oysters. But the trout caught my eye and wormed its way into my cart.

Smoked trout and crackers can make my day.

Small can of trout with a big fan following.

I got curious. Generally, I steer away from the smoked oysters because I’m afraid that they’re higher in calorie and fat content than I’m willing to spend on a snack. But is the smoked trout any better?

Well. Ouch. From the Fatsecret website of nutritional information, oysters weigh in with much less fat and fewer calories than the canned trout I consumed in two separate and satisfying sittings. #goodtoknow #tasty #sigh

Thanks, Trader Joe’s.

Trader Joe’s catch of the day: Wild Salmon Rolls

25 Jan

I’m still in D.C. It’s been extremely cold here this week, something I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss. Not.

The other night, I found myself arriving an hour early to meet a friend for dinner in Arlington. As I ascended from the Metro, I feared not being able to find a place to hang out.

But as my eyes cleared from wind chill and Metro dust, right across the street the welcoming red of the Trader Joe’s sign gleamed in my direction.

I wandered around, picked up a few greeting cards – one can always use extra cards to have on hand.

The tasting bar was offering Wild Salmon Rolls. I love East Coast fish rolls – lobster rolls in particular. And I love salmon. So, despite dinner plans, I had to try a bite.

The bite I had was fabulous. Salmony, kind of dry (my preference over gooey with dressing) and the bread was really good.

Now, I just have to pray that the Trader Joe’s in Kansas City has them on hand, too!

Thank you, TJ’s.

The wild life: Trader Joe’s frozen salmon dinner

27 Jul

As long as it’s above 90 degrees F, I’m going to be exploring meal options that require no stove-top or oven cooking.

While I could eat salad for dinner every night, I’m lured down Trader Joe’s freezer aisle and inevitably something thawable goes home with me. Case in point: Wild Salmon with orzo, spinach and zucchini.

Sure the picture on the package looked delicious, as they always do, but would the contents live up to the beauty shot, as they often don’t?

Well, if it’s featured on this blog, it means it gets a thumbs up from Things I Love At Trader Joe’s.

One hint: I’d recommend heating on the lower side of what’s recommended on the package (about 6 mins.) to make sure the salmon doesn’t become dry. Mine was tender and delicious, and looked like this:

Thank you, TJ’s.
