It’s Shamrock time! Spring is near and so is St. Paddy’s Day.

11 Mar

I love my Shamrocks. I have the purple variety. From a small bunch from Trader Joe’s a few years ago, they now fill two pots, and another repotting is needed soon. I love how they go to sleep every night and stretch their petals full every morning.

Here it is again: Your yearly chance to invite a wee Shamrock plant to call your house its home.

Fresh lavender: A peaceful way to begin the week

14 Jul

In my book, the only thing better than breathing fresh air is breathing fresh lavender!

I was thinking about lavender the other day, and wondered if TJ’s would be offering buckets of cut stems any time soon. Then I went to pick up a few things and lo and behold…

Maybe I should try thinking about winning the lottery, and then buy a ticket?

Tulip tip: Straight up on Earth Day

22 Apr

The WordPress photo challenge this week is simply, “Up.”

It coincides exactly with an amazing tip I learned recently from my brother:

TIP: Before putting tulips in a vase, place a penny at the bottom. This will make them stand straight up, instead of drooping (as they always do within hours at my house). Here’s proof that it works:

A penny at the bottom keeps this stalks straight.

Still standing straight after eight days.

Thanks, bro! Happy Earth Day!

And thanks Trader Joe’s for offering beautiful flowers. Straight up.

The daffodil: A killer lurks within

27 Mar

Last weekend, Trader Joe’s had a deal on daffodils that I couldn’t resist; a small bunch for about $1.50. A cheap way to bring home some fragrant cheer.

As I was checking out, the TJ’s cashier advised that the daffodils should have their own container. She warned that the delicate and frilly flowers tend to murder their vasemates.

Who knew?!

Daffodils: Enemy of the flowers

A gang of daffodils

I heeded her advice, but I also looked it up for myself. I’m from Missouri, the skeptic’s state, after all. And I started finding other posts with the same thing – a newly informed daffodil owner in dismay, someone who was searching to confirm this dire indictment, and people who learned to deal with the recently acquired knowledge that their flowers were hiding a deadly secret.

I also found some tips about reforming these criminal beauties. It’s the sap that does the deed. Allowed to ooze, the chemicals the daffodils release make nearby flowers unable to absorb water and so they find their demise.

Thank you, Trader Joe’s cashier!

Happy spring!

21 Mar

It’s the first day of spring, but the temperature is still pointing south. Much of the U.S. is still under mounds of snow, and tomorrow’s forecast warns for a few more inches in the Midwest.

Trader Joe’s comes through with another burst of warm weather promise and joy:

Ranunculus blooms. Beauty abounds.

Ranunculus is a lovely flower with a bloom that’s a tonic for the eyes and a name that sounds like a spell from Harry Potter.

Gorgeous flowers, and so reasonably priced!

Daffodils when it rains. Perfect. Just what I needed.

30 Jan

The world’s been a little topsy turvy lately, and the weather has been leading the tumult.

Yesterday, in Kansas City, we hit a record high of 76 degrees for that day. Thunderstorms overnight left us with a still-balmy awakening, but by mid morning the temperature started turning south, and it was downright chills and drizzle by the time I left work and headed for a quick trip to Trader Joe’s.

I was carried through the entryway in a swirl of floral scents, but I was rushing in from the cold and didn’t take as much notice as when I was leaving.

On my way out, I lingered to whiff a while. Just standing still, letting go of the day’s rush and filling my lungs with daffodil air made me feel so good. On a cold and dreary night, the little plants, sitting pretty like it was a sunny spring day, were just what I needed. A wintertime spirit lifter.
