Trader Joe’s: It’s safe to drink Bloody Mary mix, again!

22 May

I’ve been a Bloody Mary mix fan for a long time. But one in-flight look at the ingredients made me put the mix down and step away from that drink option. Until now.

What I found in the most common Mary mix was high fructose corn syrup. Yes, I can make my own mix which is the best way to get your favorite flavor and leave out the offending ingredients. And I thought, for those reasons, that would be my only option, until discovering Trader Joe’s version.

No high fructose corn syrup in this spicy Mary mix.

Trader Joe’s keeps it real

My recipe:

A glass of ice, add three olives, the juice of half a lime and fill with Bloody Mary mix. If you’re so inclined, make it an adult drink with some gin or vodka.

A glass of Bloody Mary mix made to order

A merry Mary

And enjoy!

Tapenizza: A new taste sensation

1 Apr

Last winter, I brought Trader Joe’s killer tapenade to a party. The jar was emptied in about 15 minutes. It was that delicious.

Dazed in an appetizer stupor, little minced olives danced in my head until somehow they found their way tapping across a field of dough and an idea was born. What if you had a whole pizza topped with tapenade?

How would it taste? Unbelievably delicious.

What would you call it? Tapenizza.

And a few months later, topped with a little Parmesan, voila …

An experiment gone right.

A Tapenizza is born: Warm and ready to devour.

It was just like I imagined, after combining the key ingredients:

Parmesan cheese, a jar of tapenade and pizza dough

Tapenizza’s tasty trio.

Thank you for fulfilling my dream, Trader Joe’s.

And thank you for visiting Things I Love at Trader Joe’s!

We’d love to hear your thoughts. Have you tried the tapenade? What did you think?

Galluping into the New Year

28 Dec

Trader Joe’s creative labeling is as much a feast for the eyes as the food and drink are for the lips!

I found some wine selections that offer a trifecta of tasty reds. In the race for New Year’s festive libation, you might want to pony up for one of these:

Christmas classics: Chestnuts, candy cane coal and gingerbread cookies

24 Dec

On the day before Christmas, we’re running around getting last minute gifts, making sure we’ve seen all the holiday movies, sung our favorite carols and put our cards in the mail.

It’s also time to make sure we’ve had a taste of our favorite Christmas dishes before the season’s over!

Here are a few things you may have missed, and that Trader Joe’s makes easy to serve:

Chestnuts always make me feel like I’m in 18th Century Europe. If you’re a Martha Stewart disciple, TJ’s offers chestnuts in the raw.

However, at this late date, I know I don’t have time to roast them in the oven, let alone over an open fire!

If you’re like me, you might opt for Trader Joe’s package of peeled and cooked chestnuts for any recipe need, or just for warming up and pretending they came from a German vendor at the Kindlmarkt.

Gingerbread men are another holiday treat. These cookies fall on the list of things we love but only eat during the winter holidays. And we always wonder why that is…

And who doesn’t want to miss out on getting their yearly lump of coal?! Trader Joe’s turns a frown upside down, makes lemonade out of lemons and takes a sad looking thing like a chunk of coal and makes it delicious, too!

Because you’ve been so good this year: A lump of coal for you!

Thanks, again, Trader Joe’s!

Merry Christmas to everyone from Things I Love at Trader Joe’s!

Danger: Delicious appetizers ahead

12 Dec

So, I’m at the Trader Joe’s tasting bar and the barista is offering samples of Spinach and Kale Bites.

Beware: Seductive flavor lures you to do things you didn't want to do.

Beware: Seductive flavor lures you to do things you didn’t want to do.

I  try one.

I say: This is SO good!

She says: I know!

Despite the whole kale craze, this might be my first taste. I’m a veggie lover and spinach is a fave, so it’s no surprise that these green balls with cheesy garlic goodness make my eyes pop out.

I look at the box. Well, the points it scores on flavor it loses in the calorie and fat content. Not the most I’ve seen in a snack, but enough to give pause.

I say: I’m nervous about the calories and fat content.

She says: Well, they’re appetizers, so you’re not going to have very many.

I look at her. She looks at me.

I say: Right….

We smile, sadly, knowing that what’s meant as dainty food for company is too often what’s for dinner.

Sigh.
